Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can result from doing the simplest of things such as stepping of a curb or tripping over a tennis ball. Most of us have twisted (sprained) our ankle at some point in our lives and have hopped around due to the excruciating pain.  In addition to ankle pain, sprains usually cause swelling, bruising and limited mobility. Sprains are a common cause of ankle pain and you are more vulnerable to them if you have a history of ankle injuries or a pre-existing muscle weakness. The ankle pain from a sprain is the result of injury to the ligaments from sudden stretching and can occur on either the inner or outer portions of the ankle joint. Therefore, if you are experiencing ankle pain, it is important to see your doctor because treatment options depend upon the level of ligament tearing.

Ankle pain can also result from tendinitis—an inflammation of the tendon, resulting in pain, swelling, and tenderness. Tendinitis can result from trauma, a sports injury or an illness and can involve the Achilles tendon.  Symptoms of Achilles tendonitis may include pain in the lower calf and the back of the heel. In addition to sports injuries, overuse from repeated motions, and tight calf muscles, some people get tendintis in their ankle from wearing improper shoes. Since the Achilles tendon can tear or rupture, it is important to see a doctor if you are experiencing ankle pain or if any injured parts look unusual to you. Other common causes of ankle pain include, bursitis, arthritis, diabetes and tarsal tunnel syndrome. If you are experiencing ankle pain, a doctor should evaluate your condition.
