With the rapid advancements technology provides us, we benefit with things like GPS, the Internet, and faster, better quality diagnosis in medicine. Since the beginning of my career in medicine, I kept my practice ahead of the technologic curve. I felt it was one of the important investments I would make for my patients. Technology allows us not only to treat and diagnose better, but it also give a doctor an opportunity to do something truely remarkable… educate.
The sheer volume of information doesn’t allow every person to get a medical education. But if your doctor is technologically capable, he or she can easily bring the education to you. In my practice, I have put together a series of technologies that work together that provide the patient with a 3D image of what their foot condition looks like. This is an important step since you don’t have to follow along and try to understand what your doctor is saying about your foot… rather with the use of off the shelf technololgy (and a little IT wizardry and elbow grease) in seconds a 3D model of your foot is rendered in the treatment room for you to appreaciate and see the nature of the problem.
This idea is not new. 3D surface rendering is regularly performed by much more advanced and sophisticated imaging centers and scanners. The problem is that there is significant cost to the rendering process. That’s why I have committed to my patients, and have been certified in numerous IT and Server admin technologies so that the incorporation of this technology into our practice is not a luxury or cost prohibitive, but rather a weekend project.
