Your feet will take you there…

As a Podiatrist, my profession gives me an interesting perspective on medicine.  We deal with an anatomic specialty.  What that means, is that a Podiatrist treats all the systems that integrate with the foot. Dermatology, Endocrinology, Orthopedics, Neurological, Vascular and others.

So the observation point of a Podiatrist is from the foot up.  This is interesting because there is more to the relevance of the foot than it is given credit for.

Almost all of human development can be attributed to the nature of Homo Sapien Sapien being an upright being.  For this to happen, some very important anatomic considerations had to be met.  Your foot is one of those remarkable pieces of engineering that paved the way for the growth and development of the human race.

The foot is the first part of humanity to lead the way to new discoveries on Earth.  Even in space, the footprint is what we have left as proof of our technologic advancement.  While in Tanzania, I had the opportunity to visit Oldupai Gorge, a truly remarkable place.  This is where the Leaky’s discovered some of the oldest ancestral fossils of modern humans.

Having the opportunity to examine these fossils up close and personal, as a foot surgeon, I was taken back by the size, and the similarity to our foot structure.  These feet were tiny (about the size of a 8 year old child’s foot). But what was the most remarkable site was a photo juxtaposition of the oldest human foot prints and the farthest human footprints on our moon.  Something to think about.
